Why professional racers’ bikes don’t explode in heavy crashes
Because they fill their petrol tank with Explosafe! All important national and international motorsport federations literally state that “an explosion suppressing system, preferably Explosafe, is to be used”. So what does Explosafe do?
The risk for an explosion starts when petrol and air come into contact with a spark. Explosafe prevents that from happening in several ways. By dividing the tank into small cells, it prevents the flame from rapidly spreading and thus causing the explosion. The aluminium pellets help cooling the flames because they partially absorb the heat. Aluminium has another advantage; it can’t be loaded with static electricity so there’s no risk of causing a spark while filling the bike up.
Explosafe hardly requires any space in the petrol tank and weighs a few hundred grams at most, even in a king size endurance tank. Another advantage is that it stops sloshing fuel from influencing the bike’s stability.
Be careful with foam systems who claim to do the same. These systems are made of plastic, so they just play along with the flames. They tend to retain fuel and they take up more space, thereby reducing the capacity of the reservoir. The aggressive components of fuel slowly eat away the foam, so it needs replacing every now and then. It’s not as easy to install either, if you compare it to the little aluminium pellets.
Explosafe has a couple of nice references too. FIM (Superbike, Endurance, Supersport, Superstock, ...), it’s the only US Air Force & Navy approved product, all tanks and trucks used by Esso and Total are fitted with Explosafe, ...
Explosafe is being sold per 9 litres, so you’ll need two 9-litre boxes to fill a road bike’s reservoir. Click here to have a look at Explosafe in the online catalogue.
aber Achtung das ist nicht der oben angebotene tankschaum...
